Crispy Jalapeno Popper Wontons

  • Author: Lina
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A quick 15-minute fusion snack or dinner featuring crispy fried wonton wrappers filled with a creamy, spicy mixture of cream cheese, cheddar, and jalapeños.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces (225g) full-fat block cream cheese, softened
  • 34 medium fresh jalapeños, finely chopped (seeds removed for mild heat)
  • 1/2 cup (50g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 package (40-50 count) square wonton wrappers
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • Vegetable oil (for shallow frying)
  • Optional Dipping Sauce: 1/2 cup ranch dressing mixed with 1 tablespoon sriracha

Instructions

  1. Chop the jalapeños finely. For less heat, remove seeds and membranes before chopping.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, chopped jalapeños, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix until smooth and uniform.
  3. Unfold the wonton wrappers and keep them covered with a damp paper towel to prevent drying out.
  4. Place one wrapper in a diamond shape. Place 1 teaspoon of filling in the center.
  5. Bring the bottom point of the diamond up to the top point to form a triangle, pressing edges firmly to seal. Alternatively, brush side points with egg wash and bring them to the center.
  6. Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully place 4-5 wontons into the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes, flipping halfway, until deep golden brown and bubbly.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve immediately with dipping sauce.

Notes

Keep wonton wrappers covered with a damp towel to prevent cracking. Do not overfill with more than 1 teaspoon of filling to prevent bursting. For extra crunch, double fry. Air fry at 375°F for 8-10 minutes for a lighter option. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days; reheat in an air fryer or toaster oven to restore crispiness.
